Today, we have many voices in wine and many ways they communicate. I started with telexes, then landlines, then cell phones the size of bricks, then computers, then the world of influencers, bloggers, SOMM TV, movies like Sideways, and other social and media phenomena. I’m a bit of a dinosaur, and not an early adopter to many of these changes.

Sometimes, wine and food criticism seem much more about the reviewer than the wine or the restaurant being reviewed. Sometimes, it is more about attacking another opinion than the wine or producer who made it. Maybe that is part of a political mindset that has seeped into our collective behavior. I hope not. For a vintner, optimism is essential to survival. You’re dealing with Mother Nature, and she can be fickle, cruel, and wonderful. Water separates the continents. Wine brings people together. I can’t find the person responsible for this concept or quote. Maybe it came out of the ether. In vino veritas.
